The 36-foot boats came into use during the 1930's and generally had a three man crew.  They were phased out and replaced by the larger 44-foot motor lifeboat.  The last of these units was retired in 1987.  This 36-foot self-righting motor lifeboat, number 36498, was commissioned in 1946, and served until 1979.  Restoration of 38498 began in 2004 and was completed in 2007.
