36-foot motor lifeboat The 36-foot boats came into use during the 1930's and generally had a three man crew. They were phased out and replaced by the larger 44-foot motor lifeboat. The last of these units was retired in 1987. This 36-foot self-righting motor lifeboat, number 36498, was commissioned in 1946, and served until 1979. Restoration of 38498 began in 2004 and was completed in 2007. Read more about the Coast Guard's unsinkable 36-foot motor lifeboats. Read more about USCG
