The Port Orford Lifeboat Station (Coast Guard Station #318) was constructed in 1934 by the U.S. Coast Guard to provide lifesaving service to the southern portion of the Oregon coast, a service performed until 1970.  The Point Orford Heritage Society, working with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, has established a museum on this historic site. The park has excellent hiking trails on the headlands affording spectacular views up and down the Pacific Coast.

President's Message

President Dave Holman
at the 2009 Jerry Can Races

Welcome to the 2011 year of the Point Orford Heritage Society!

As your new President, I wish to extend my New Year’s greeting to all Society members and officers.  Welcome to our new Directors, Bonnie Smith and Georganne White.  Thanks to Steve Roemen, who has presided over the Society over the past two years and will serve as Vice President this next year. Steve, I can use all the help you can give me!  Thanks to Pat McArdle for continuing as Treasurer, and Georgeanne for stepping in as Secretary.  Thanks to the additional Directors, Pete Rasmussen, Briana Goodwin, Dusty Harrington-Colins, and Linda Smith for continuing to be on the Board into the new year, and Alicia Billings, Joan McDow, Wendy Lohse and Rick Francona for their work as Directors last year. A great big thanks to OPRD’s Greg Ryder for his excellent partnering skills.

We have an exciting year ahead!  Plans are well underway to merge the Heritage Society with the Friends of Cape Blanco. The name of the new 501 (c) (3) organization will be CAPE BLANCO HERITAGE SOCIETY, and the goal is to have the new organization in place by April, 2011. All 2011 members of both the Heritage Society and the Friends of Cape Blanco will automatically become members of the new Cape Blanco Heritage Society when the merger is complete. Meetings to complete the merger have been on-going for the past few months, with representatives from both the Friends and the Heritage Society meeting to work out the details in a very amicable manner.  There are many details to sort out, but general agreement prevails all around!

There will be many outstanding opportunities for members of the new organization to take part in and help showcase our beautiful historic sights; the Cape Blanco Lighthouse, the Hughes House, and the Lifeboat Museum.  Docents are always needed for the day of the week that the regular volunteer docents have off.  It is a great pleasure to meet folks from all over the world as they visit and enjoy our treasures.  Of course being active as a volunteer in any capacity is always welcome.

I am looking forward to an exciting year with many opportunities for the many volunteers who want to see the new CAPE BLANCO HERITAGE SOCIETY flourish!
